United Parish of Upper Nidderdale

As many of you may have heard, the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds is soon to be replaced with the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. The General Synod of the Church of England voted on July 8th to close the diocese of Ripon and Leeds along with the Diocese of Bradford and the Diocese of Wakefield. All this will happen on Easter 2014 and at that time the three Diocesan Bishops will depart (the Right Reverend John Packer, Bishop of Ripon & Leeds, having already announced that he is retiring on January 31st2014). Arrangements will be put into place to allow us to operate consistently during the transitional period. There will not be any instant changes; these will be gradual over a period of about a year.

On that same appointed day there will be a new birth as the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales comes into being! This is not an amalgamation nor a take-over but an entirely new entity with entirely new boundaries and an entirely new way of doing things which is yet to be worked out. What is certain is that the new diocese will be split into five archdeaconries and each of these will have an area bishop. Our parishes will be part of a large rural area focussed on Ripon. The Bishop of Leeds will be the diocesan bishop.

In many ways, what happens in our parishes will continue as before but there will be some changes and some structures will alter. What is exciting about this is that we are yet to fully work out how this will function. We are trying to work out how the structure can best fit the mission and ministry of the churches rather than trying to fit our mission and ministry into some preconceived model.

It’s expected that the name of the new Diocesan Bishop will be announced in February and there will be an Acting Bishop between the Appointed Day and the new Bishop taking up his post – probably in summer. See the timetable on the diocesan website at this web address http://www.riponleeds.anglican.org/diocese-of-west-yorkshire-and-the-dales.html

The Bishop of Pontefract, the Right Reverend Tony Robinson will become the Area Bishop for Wakefield and the Bishop of Knaresborough, the Right Reverend James Bell, the Area Bishop for Ripon.

There will be the opportunity to celebrate the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds and also welcome the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.
